Sligo to appeal for leniency

The Sligo County Board are to appeal for leniency against Neil Carew's sending off in the county's tremendous victory over Kildare in last Saturday's All-Ireland qualifier at Croke Park. “We are definitely going to appeal for some leniency,” said Sligo PRO, Fr. Liam Devine.

“County board chairman, Joe Queenan, and secretary, Tommie Kilcoyne, will talk on behalf of the player, when they meet with GAA officials. He could possibly be suspended for up to two months, but hopefully that won't happen. The incident seemed harmless enough, but we'll just have to wait and see.”

Apart from the sending-off, it was a wonderful occasion for the Connacht side. Despite playing 62 minutes with just 14 men, the Sligo men produced a gallant display of football to win by a point over Leinster giants Kildare, 0-16 to 0-15.

“The spirit the guys showed was unbelievable,” said Devine. “We haven't been in Croker for a while, but we made up for our long absence with a real gritty display. The buzz in the county is something special, and it seems the win has given everyone a huge lift. Sligo is a big soccer town, but all the talk this week is about last Sunday.”
