Portugal’s dramatic extra-time victory over France in the Euro 2016 final on Sunday night saw Irish viewers choose both RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player in huge numbers, despite more choice being available than ever before.

An average of 782,100 viewers watched the game on RTÉ2, with a share of 46% of those watching television at the time tuning in.

The figure peaked at 925,700 in extra-time as Eder fired Portugal to a historic win.

RTÉ Player hosted 94,100 live streams of the final on RTÉ Player, making the encounter the fifth most viewed match during Euro 2016.

Ireland v Sweden was the most watched game on RTÉ Player with 131,950 streams.

All 10 of the 10 top-rating games broadcast in Ireland during Euro 2016 were shown on RTÉ2.

Ireland’s defeat to France in the last-16 stage was the highest-rating match with an average of 1,262,000 viewers and a share of 83% of the available audience.

RTÉ’s Euro 2016 coverage on RTÉ Player attracted two million streams, while content across RTÉ.ie and RTÉ News Now app attracted 1.2 million unique browsers and 7.15 million page impressions.

All of the Republic of Ireland’s games were also broadcast live on RTÉ Radio 1.

Euro 2016 best moments

Reflecting on the figures, RTÉ’s Group Head of Sport Ryle Nugent said: “It is extremely heartening that, in a time of intense and increasing competition, RTÉ Sport’s output continues to engage Irish audiences in such huge numbers.

“It has been a fantastic month of top-class action from France and we are both pleased and proud to see that not only did most Irish viewers choose RTÉ for last night’s game, but that all 10 of the top-10 rating games were on RTÉ2.”
