Jon Walters hands Ireland fitness boost

Jon Walters has handed the Republic of Ireland management team a huge boost after coming through training this morning in Versailles.

The Stoke midfielder has been struggling with an Achilles tendon injury but looks to be on the verge of fitness for Monday’s Euro 2016 clash with Sweden in Paris.

Assistant manager Roy Keane said: “Jon trained today. He got through the session start to finish and we'll obviously see over the next 24 hours if there is any sort of reaction.

“He finished the session so I'm sure he'll be delighted and we are. I suppose basically everyone is available for selection so that's great news.

“I'll be honest with you - the priority is looking at the game on Monday. Unless there is any sort of reaction from Jon - that's in the hands of the medical staff - but if he got through training today and obviously we'll have a light session tomorrow and we'll think he'll be available for the game on Monday, then you worry about the other games after.

“There is always a risk players are going to get injured etc, but we're just pleased that he has got through the session. It was a decent enough session for him, it's not as if he just walked around. He had a bit of possession, he joined in the full session.”

Robbie Keane and Robbie Brady also completed training today.

Keane added: “It's not just Jon, obviously we had worries the last few days about other people. No reaction to Robbie Keane or Robbie Brady's injury, so to have all the players available selection is obviously good news for the manager.”
