The Republic of Ireland's team training session scheduled for Friday morning was cancelled to give players extra time to rest ahead of the Euro 2016 opener against Sweden on Monday.

The FAI also confirmed the cancellation of today's media activity.

Martin O'Neill's squad are set to resume training at their Montbauron base in Versailles on Saturday morning.

Commenting on the decision to cancel today's training session, RTÉ's Soccer correspondent Tony O'Donoghue told Morning Ireland: "It seems a little odd alright. The training facilities are state of the art and the players seemed to be enjoying the session yesterday, although it was a tough decision.

"The squad got a lot of time off when they were in camp in Cork, but you never know it may work for them.

"Martin O'Neill has made a decision to give them a break and 'treat his squad like men' as he said.

"Four years ago in Poland there was a feeling that Giovanni Trapattoni hads them closeted in their quarters and they eventually ended up killing each other.

"It's a different way of doing it. Hopefully, it will get them right physically and mentally for Monday."
