Paul McGrath has described "the elation" amongst the Irish team after beating England at Euro '88 and claimed the Republic of Ireland could have gone on to win the tournament had they not succumbed to the Dutch in Gelsenkirchen.
The Ireland hero has been reminiscing about his experience at the tournament in Germany in an interview with RTÉ's Sunday Sport.
"We weren't going there to make up the numbers, we knew we had a good side, and we knew we all played for each other," McGrath said.
"That was the most important thing for us. We knew we were a team, and if we played like a team, we could beat anyone.
"We went into every game thinking 'we're going to put up a great fight. If you beat us, you beat us. But we're going to put up a hell of a fight'. That's the way it turned out."
McGrath also discusses the indomitable victory over England, Ray Houghton's unseen heading ability, the brilliant performance against Russia and Wim Kieft's incredible spinning header which sent Ireland home.
