Republic of Ireland forwards Robbie Keane and Jon Walters are expected to resume training with the side next week, while concerns have eased over midfielder James McCarthy with the FAI confirming that there are no other injury concerns.

McCarthy returned to training on Thursday having missed the Euro 2016 warm-up games against Holland and Belarus.

The Glaswegian had been suffering from a groin / hamstring injury picked up while playing for Everton in the Premier League.

Captain Keane (calf) and Walters (Achilles) have been working with FAI medical staff in order to be fit for the 13 June clash with Sweden in Paris, their opening Group E game.

Speaking on FAI TV, Walters, Ireland’s star performer in qualification, said:  “I had an operation on my knee about seven weeks ago. When you come back you have secondary little things.

“I had a little bit of tenderness on both Achilles, tendinitis. Out on the training ground it flares up a little bit, you’ve just got to settle it down.

“You don’t want to push through it and go into next week, the week leading up to the game pushing yourself through it.

“You have a chance to settle it down, which we did, a couple of days and that’s what I’ve done.

“I’ve just been working in the gym the past couple of days, pretty tough, and looking to go again on Monday training.”

The team departs to France from Dublin Airport on Wednesday.
