Oxford United's Callum O'Dowda has been included in Martin O'Neill's 35-man Ireland squad ahead of the upcoming friendly internationals against Holland and Belarus.

The 21-year-old can play in midfield or attack and scored ten times this season, helping The Us to promotion from League 2 to England's third tier.

O'Dowda has played five times for the Under-21s and was Oxford's young player of the year in the 2014-15 season.

The Ireland manager has kept his options opened ahead of his Euro 2016 deadline on 31 May, when he will have to reduce that squad by 12 for the tournament in France. O'Neill will announce his final 23 on 28 May, with the Euro 2016 squad then travelling to Cork for the Fota Island training camp and Turner's Cross clash with Belarus.

Keiren Westwood returns in the goalkeeping department, however, the Sheffield Wednesday stopper might be ruled out of the Netherlands clash should his club side reach the Championship play-off final.

Likewise, Hull City's David Meyler and Derby County's Jeff Hendrick, Richard Keogh, Cyrus Christie would also miss that vital friendly should their respective sides make it to Wembley.

David McGoldrick also returns to the squad, while Aberdeen's Jonny Hayes must have suitably impressed at the last gathering as he has retained his place.

"Everything now is about preparing for EURO 2016 and that is why we wanted to play a team of the calibre of the Netherlands as we aim to make the most of our time ahead of the departure for France," said O'Neill at a press conference at Three's Headquarters.

"We will travel to Fota Island Resort for a training camp and a game against Belarus in the week afterwards, but this game at the Aviva Stadium is very important in terms of building our match sharpness and getting into tournament mode.

"It is also an opportunity to play in front of the Ireland supporters, who have been terrific, at the Aviva Stadium before leaving for the Euros and that is something that means a lot to the players because when we get together, it all comes together."

The squad will depart for France on Wednesday, June 8.
