Primoz Roglic took advantage of running in the best conditions to secure victory on the stage nine time trial at the Giro d'Italia as Gianluca Brambilla clung on to the pink jersey.
Roglic (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) finished 10 seconds clear of IAM Cycling's Mathias Brandle to take his first Grand Tour stage victory in the 40.5km time trial in Chianti.
Roglic headed out 42nd and, crucially, before the rain started and set a target that was not surpassed.
The general classification contenders faced more difficult conditions but Brambilla produced a fine ride to finish 17th in the stage and remain first in the standings, one second ahead of Etixx-QuickStep team-mate Bob Jungels, who posted the sixth quickest time of the day.
Astana's Vincenzo Nibali, the 2013 winner, is up to fifth in the GC standings, 53 seconds behind Brambilla, after finishing two minutes 13 seconds down on Roglic in 19th place.
Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) is two seconds further back in the overall rankings, Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) another three and Team Sky's Mikel Landa one minute 18 behind in eighth.
Russian Ilnur Zakarin (Team Katusha), who started the day in second place, had a miserable day, needing two replacement bikes after a puncture and a crash before another fall in the closing stages saw him slip two minutes and nine seconds behind Brambilla.
Marcel Kittel (Etixx-QuickStep), who won stages two and three and wore the pink jersey for stage four, did not take part in the time trial as he decided to leave the race. He said in a statement on his team's website: "I need to rest before the future goals of the season."
Ireland's Nicloas Roche (Team Sky) finished in 66th overall, four minutes and 18 seconds off Roglic, while his team-mate and compatriot Philip Deignana was 74th, a further 14 seconds off the stage winner.
Roche is 28th in the general classification, six minutes and 47 seconds down on Brambilla. Deignan is back in 95th, 41 minutes and 20 seconds off the leader.
