Italian Denis Lunghi of the Colpack team won the 200km 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Campobasso to Chieti on Friday. The riders rode the 200 km stage under pouring rain. Lunghi was part of a six-rider break which formed 76km from the finish.
He attacked alone 30 kms out on the tough climb to Chieti and won by 36 seconds ahead of German Bert Grabsch of the Phonak team and Italian Lorenzo Bernucci of the Landbouwkrediet team. German Jens Heppner of Telekom retained the overall race lead.
