Italian Gilberto Simoni of the Saeco team won the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia from Benevento to Campitello Matese on Thursday. Simoni, who has been allowed to continue in the race despite testing positive for cocaine metabolites, beat compatriot Francesco Casagrande of the Fassa Bortolo team in a sprint after they broke away two kilometres from the finish. German rider Jens Heppner of the Telekom team retained the overall race lead.
