O'Callaghan elected new camogie president

Miriam O'Callaghan was elected Uachtarán of Cumann Camogaiochta na nGael following a close contest with Down's Helen McAleevy at the sport’s 2003 Congress in Arklow last weekend. Miriam, who succeeds Pádhraichín Ní Raifeartaigh, becomes the first ever Offaly person to hold the position.

Among the many items discussed over the weekend was the forthcoming alliance with the GAA, as well as next year's centenary celebrations. It was also agreed that Congress 2004 will go ahead in the CityWest Hotel in County Dublin on February 28th/29th.

Meanwhile, action on the field continued last Sunday with Kildare continuing their winning ways when they overcame Meath 1-11 to 1-03 in Longwood. The game was only two minutes old when Sharon Raleigh put the Royals on their way with a fine goal, however, the Lilywhites refused to wilt and they were 0-07 to 1-02 ahead at the break. Kildare came more into the game in the second half, and with ten minutes remaining disaster struck for Meath. Christine Raleigh, who switched to defence, was the cause of an own goal which put Kildare ahead 1-09 to 1-03. A further two points for Kildare only adedd to the Royals’ misery.

The other Division one match, Limerick v Wexford, was postponed, as was the scheduled Division 2 encounter between Tipperary and Antrim.
