Peter McKenna 'can't see' Katie Taylor fighting at Croke Park in 2025

The prospect of Katie Taylor fighting at Croke Park seems more remote than ever after stadium director Peter McKenna revealed the GAA has not had any recent contact with her promoter Eddie Hearn.

The two-weight undisputed world champion, whose last bout was a thrilling rematch victory over Amanda Serrano, has frequently spoken of her desire to fill the country's biggest stadium.

However, plans to fight at GAA HQ in 2023 fell through, after Hearn said that the cost of security measures the association required was too high.

Taylor eventually had her first professional contest on home soil at the 3Arena instead and though she has continued to state a desire to fight at Croker, Hearn has repeatedly cast doubt on the possibility of reaching an agreement.

Last month, he did say that a third bout with Serrano might justify the costs, but at the launch of the GAA's annual report today, McKenna said there had only been "megaphone diplomacy" rather than direct contact.

"Eddie hasn't been in touch with us," McKenna told RTÉ Sport of a potential bout in 2025. "It flashes up every so often but no, we haven't been contacted.

"The approach seems to be megaphone diplomacy, throw everything at it and something will happen in that sense."

"I can't see it happening because we haven't heard about it, bar reading in the papers"

McKenna added that finding a slot and getting council approval at this stage could be a tall order.

"Katie Taylor is a magnificent athlete and I think everyone is very, very proud of what she's achieved as an athlete," he said.

"But to fill Croke Park with 80,000, you need an undercard, you need a whole razzmatazz to go with it. Those things can't be done in a short period of time.

"The calendar, really there's not a lot of space to say, 'yeah, we could fit it in on that weekend'. What time of the year it would be on? We have Oasis and Robbie Williams [in August].

"Even getting an event management plan together, getting the City Council to approve it and so on, there'd be a fair bit of work in that.

"So I think it's a kite-flyer rather than genuine. I can't see it happening because we haven't heard about it, bar reading in the papers."
