IABA members vote for all-island meetings

A vote in July didn't meet the required margin

IABA annual and extraordinary meetings can now be held anywhere in Ireland after a second vote on the motion secured an 80-0 vote in favour.

At an EGM held on 10 July, the motion to replace the word "State" with "Island of Ireland" in Articles 5 and 73(e) of the Articles of Association of the Company Constitution, did not pass with only 66% voting in favour. It required 75% to pass.

Just four weeks later though, the motion has passed with 100% voting in favour of the amendment, ensuring that meetings can now be held in Northern Ireland.

Irish Athletic Boxing Association chief executive Fergal Carruth, who along with IABA chairperson Ciarán Kirwan announced his resignation this week, said that it was the right outcome.

"The result is very much to be welcomed, and it is the right decision in all respects," said Carruth, who is due to step down from his role on 2 September.

"It must be acknowledged, however, that the 10 July vote created a deep sense of disquiet and distress. This will take some time to heal - a process which can begin this evening."

Chairperson Kirwan said: "This decision by Ireland's boxing clubs ensures a unified way forward is possible and achievable. This decision shows the unity at the heart of Irish Boxing, and the Boxing Family's ability to be progressive and forward-thinking."
