The prospect of a Katie Taylor-Delfine Persoon rematch has been put on the back burner after reports emerged that the Belgian will reclassify as an amateur to compete in next year's Olympic Games.

The Brussels Times reported that the police inspector, who has previously spoken of her desire to take part in the games, would reclassify as an amateur from 1 January and attempt to qualify for Tokyo.

She could come up against Ireland's former world champion Kellie Harrington in the March European qualifying event in London.

Bray boxer Taylor made history in June by unifying all four world lightweight titles with a hard-fought, narrow victory over Persoon at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Persoon cried foul in the aftermath however, lodging a formal complaint over the judges' decision to the World Boxing Council, and Taylor had spoken of her enthusiasm for a rematch to settle any question over the legitimacy of her victory.

"I look forward to beating her a lot more convincingly, to shut everyone up basically!" said Taylor, who had planned to fight Persoon, welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus and multiple-weight champion Amanda Serrano in 2020.
