'All I was managing was the gym' - Billy Walsh discusses his fallout with Irish boxing

Billy Walsh has opened up on aspects of his new contract with Irish Boxing that prompted him to step down as head coach in 2015.

Walsh led Ireland to Olympic, World and European gold medals during his stint, but left his role with IABA's High Performance Unit and senior team, following a breakdown in contract talks.

Speaking on RTÉ's The Ray D'Arcy Show, Walsh explained that "all I was managing was the gym," according to the terms of the new deal, which he felt was unsatisfactory.

The Wexford native has since linked up with the boxing programme in America, and led Team USA to gold, silver and bronze at the 2016 Olympics. He was also named the world boxing coach of the year on the back of that success.

"When I made my decision in October of two years ago, there was no looking back," he revealed.

"I cried for many nights. I was in Assisi at the World Championships training camp and I knew then it was over.

"I got a contract that all I was managing was the gym.

"I had no control over any part of the programme, so no selection, I had no management at all over the budget or anything. I designed the budgets and the programmes, all of that.

"All I was doing was looking after the gym (in the new contract). At that stage, when I made up my mind, I made up my mind and that was it.

"For me, it was over, there was no looking back and having any regrets."

He continued: "I don't believe that (IABA's regret over his resignation). They wouldn't give you a contract like that if they wanted you to stay.

"They had to be forced by the minister, they had to be forced by the Sports Council to bring up to the level of people who were working in my job, for the same level of finance."

Walsh also revealed that he has no immediate plans to return home to resume his coaching in Ireland, and is focused on improving on the progress he has made with the American boxing team.

"I'm there until Tokyo (Olympics in 2020). I don't think there's an appetite for that to happen. I'm very happy where I am."
