Two Irish fighters will be hoping to upgrade bronze for silver at least in Sunday's World Boxing Championships semi-finals.

Ireland team captain Michael Conlan is first in the ring, followed by Michael O'Reilly. Both are already assured of bronze medals at least, but both will want to get to their respective finals and go for gold.

Conlan takes on Dzimitry Asanau of Belarus in their bantamweight bout in Doha shortly before 6.0 Irish time.

Middleweight O’Reilly faces Bektemir Melikuieve of Uzbekistan in the last four and is due in the ring shortly after 7.0.

The top three bantamweights and middleweights in Doha qualify for Rio 2016, with the losing semi-finalists going into box-offs for Olympic places.

Conlan has already qualified for next year's Games through the World Series of Boxing with Italia Thunder.

Light heavyweight Joe Ward is in semi-final action on Monday against Ishod Rasulov of Uzbekistan, an opponent he beat in the Chemistry Cup three years ago.

Only the two light heavy finalists will qualify for the the Olympics via this championship.

Conlan and Ward, the current European Elite champions, and O’Reilly, the current European Games champion, are all guaranteed at least bronze in having won their quarter-finals on Saturday.

Ireland’s medal haul at the World Championships has now improved from 9 to 12 since the inaugural tournament in Havana in 1974.

Saturday was a historic day for Irish amateur boxing, with three fighters winning medals. Brendan Irvine was the one to miss out, unlucky to lose his contest against handy Cuban Joahnys Argilagos.
