Blaney and Holmes settle for silver

Ireland's up and coming stars will be taking home two silver and two bronze medals from the 18-nation Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany.

Navan welterweight Chris Blaney and Corinthians bantamweight Glen Holmes were involved in finals on Sunday, but both had to settle for silver at the prestigious multi-nations tournament.

Holmes, who was 3-0 up at one stage, lost 10-5 to Kazak bantamweight Rusian Madiyev and Navan ace Blaney was beaten 6-1 by Denis Radovan of Germany in the 69Kg final.

World junior champ Joe Ward and Stephen Tracey both earned bronze medals, losing at the semi-final stage.

The medal haul maintains the IABA’s remarkable sequence of having won medals at every international tournament entered since the 2007 AIBA World Senior Championships in Chicago.

The Ireland team are due to return home on Monday evening.
