Sharlene Mawdsley quickly revised the personal best she set on Wednesday in Italy

Tipperary athlete Sharlene Mawdsley ran a new personal best of 50.17 seconds to win the 400m at the Continental Tour Bronze meeting in Brussels on Saturday evening, adding to her victory in Italy earlier this week.

Local favourite Helena Ponette was just under a second behind, clocking 51.15, with French athlete Isabelle Black finishing third in 51.34.

Mawdsley improved on the 50.52 personal best she set in her season opener on Wednesday in Italy, a time that surpassed her previous best from the Olympic Games in Paris two years ago.

The European mixed relay gold medallist sliced a further 0.35 seconds off that mark at the meeting in the King Baudouin Stadium, moving to within touching distance of the elusive 50-second barrier in the one-lap event.

While Mawdsley faces a busy summer schedule, the European Athletics Championships from 10 to 16 August remain her main target.

Her new personal best would have been enough to secure individual 400m bronze in three of the last four editions of the championships.

Elsewhere, Niamh Allen claimed another top-10 finish with sixth and led the Irish women's team to silver in the European 10,000m Cup in La Spezia, Italy.

Allen clocked a season's best time of 32 minutes and 15 seconds, an Athletics Ireland 'B standard' for the European Athletics Championships in August for the 25-lap race.

Elzbieta Glinka of Poland won the title in 31:45.36, from Alessia Zarbo of France.

Cork native Fiona Everard finished in tenth position in a new personal best time of 32:41.38.

Sorcha Nic Dhómhnaill, Faye Dervan, Emily Haggard-Kearney and Patricia Jackman also contributed to Ireland's team score.
