Rhasidat Adeleke claimed a silver medal at the National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] Championships in the 400m final in Albuquerque on Saturday night.

The final was split over two heats, where the 20-year-old ran a time 50.45.

Running for the University of Texas, where she is in the second year of a scholarship, Adeleke was denied gold by American Britton Wilson who won the other section in 49.48 - the second fastest indoor time in history.

Adeleke's first lap (23.07) was faster than the opening 200m time posted by Femke Bol (23.63) when the Netherlands athlete smashed the 400m indoor record recently with a time 53.11 last month.

It continues Tallaght AC athlete's outstanding form on the track this year.

Two weeks ago she broke her own Irish record for the women's 400m by winning the Big 12 Conference final in Lubbock, Texas in a time of 50.33 seconds, while in January she broke the Irish indoor 200m record with a world-leading time of 22.52, the fastest time by a European woman since 2003.

US sprint legend Michael Johnson, a four-time Olympic gold medallist across 200m, 400m and 4x400m, shared a video of Adeleke as she qualified for the 400m final earlier this week highlighting where further improvements can be made.

"Look out when she learns to use those arms. She's carrying them instead using them to drive the legs. The difference is significant over 400. Helps increase speed and reduce fatigue," he wrote.
