The European Athletics Championship in Glasgow will see Thomas Barr take part in his first major indoor championship, with the event seeing 12 Irish athletes in action on the opening day. 

Barr, a European outdoor medallist from last summer, goes in the morning session of the men's 400m heats. 

Cillin Greene (Galway City Harriers) also goes in the same event.

Both athletes go in lane 2 in their respective heats. The first two in each heat advance along with the next fastest four qualifiers to the semi-final stage in the evening session.

DAY 1 TIMETABLE

Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (DSD) is next up for the Irish in the women’s 800m heats followed by Sophie Becker (St Joseph’s) and Phil Healy (Bandon) in the women’s 400m heats.

The first session will conclude with John Travers (Donore Harriers) and Sean Tobin (Clonmel) in the men’s 3,000m heats – they will be the first Irish athletes looking to try and make the final.

In the evening session, Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley) goes in Group A of the women’s high jump qualification.

Ciara Mageean (UCD) aims for the final of women’s 1500m in heat 2 of qualification.

In the 800m heats Mark English (UCD), European indoor silver medallist from Prague 2015, Zak Curran (DSD) and Conall Kirk (Annadale Striders) making his Irish debut.
