Shamrock Rovers are to appeal the decision to deduct them three points for playing Paul Shiels while he was under suspension.

Shiels picked up the ban while playing for the now defunct Dublin City and Rovers were unaware of the ban when he lined out for them against Dundalk.

In a statement, the eircom League First Division side said: 'Shamrock Rovers FC awaits formal notification from the eircom league of the three point deduction that they gave to the club at an eircom league management meeting yesterday.

'We are very unhappy with the inconsistency shown by the league with this decision and also the procedures followed in the case.

'Shamrock Rovers will lodge an appeal to the decision and pursue this with vigour.'

Derry City escaped punishment for a similar offence.

Sean Hargan played for the Candystripes while banned, but the League accepted that notice of the ban was not sent in the prescribed timeframe.

Meanwhile, tickets for Shamrock Rovers’ eagerly awaited FAI Carlsberg Cup match with Bohemians on 25 August are now available. The match is all-ticket.
