Shamrock Rovers have been hit with a three point deduction for playing Paul Shiels while he was under suspension.

Shiels picked up the ban while playing for the now defunct Dublin City and Rovers were unaware of the ban when he lined out for them against Dundalk.

However, the eircom League Board of Control still saw fit to deduct three points from the Hoops. It is not yet known if the club will appeal.

Derry City have escaped punishment for a similar offence. Sean Hargan played for the Candystripes while banned, but the League accepted that notice of the ban was not sent in the prescribed timeframe.
