An estimated 60,000 Irish children receive the sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time every year. But what if you are not a practising Catholic and your child tells you they want to be one of these 60,000?

This is the position Australian immigrant, Anne Wayne, found herself in. Anne is not a practising Catholic. But when her daughter approached her and told her she wanted to make her First Communion, she decided to support her all the way.

To better understand the process, Anne interviewed members of the clergy, academics specialising in religion, psychology and morality, as well as her daughter Mairéad.

Find out what Anne learned about the tradition of First Holy Communion in Ireland on Mairéad’s First Communion.
