Liveline has heard its fair share of legal conundrums but Laura and Paul spoke to Philip Boucher-Hayes this afternoon about a quandary that’s one for the books. The gist of it is, Laura and Paul got married in 1990 and divorced in an English High Court before moving back to Ireland. Due to a legal quirk, their divorce is not recognised in Ireland. But they are not officially married here either.

Laura told Philip that they don’t need a piece of paper to prove their love for each other but that when it comes to matters of inheritance and other legal issues like pensions, the situation they find themselves in makes things complicated.

We’re trying to avoid heartbreaking and costly legal and tax expenses that would happen in the future on the death of either party. We’ve no security whatsoever.”
