The year is 1963 and a musician called Johnny Cash is about to embark on his first tour of Ireland. He brings with him June Carter and The Tennessee Three. In the documentary, Johnny Cash’s Lost Tour of Ireland, a recording of the tour is heard for the first time. And it has its own story to tell.
Having achieved a huge Irish hit with ‘Forty Shades of Green’, Johnny Cash was well on his way to becoming a global star when he arrived to play the National Stadium. But it wasn’t all going smoothly. ’63 was a difficult time for Cash. He was struggling to conceal his relationship with June Carter (they were both married to other people), his voice was showing the effects of amphetamine abuse and the record label was at his heels.
In Johnny Cash’s Lost Tour of Ireland, we witness the beginning of Cash’s relationship with Irish audiences and the country itself.
