The scene: a hotel reception in Westport. Patrons are dancing in the bar to the house band. But one group of women is less than impressed. “I wouldn’t even have that at my funeral”, remarks one. Another agrees that the only thing that can salvage the situation is “a bit of Nathan Carter to do a bit of line dancing.”
Just before Christmas, 36 retired women from the Riverchapel ladies’ club in Wexford set out on a week-long ‘Golden Years’ holiday to Westport, Co. Mayo. But one member of their cohort was not so golden. A young, dreadlocked radio production student called Nathan decided to tag along for the ride.
On their journey, Nathan got more than just the audio he had hoped for. He got an insight into the lives of 36 special women, the things they have lived through and their hopes for the future. Even if the future only concerns tracking down those coveted Hatchimals for their grand-children for now.
