The 12th series of Operation Transformation is almost at our door and is currently looking for applicants. One of last year's fan favourites, Garda David Cryan, joined Ray D'Arcy to give him an update on how life has been treating him since he stepped off those very public scales.

David told Ray that he started the show weighing 19st 5 ½ lbs (123kg) and that during the course of the programme, he lost just under 20% of his body weight. As of today, he weighs 15st and 8lbs (98kg).

"I'm feeling brilliant and I'm looking okay as well...I'm very happy with where I am now."

David's long hours working as a Garda were a factor in some of his unhealthy habits.

"I kind of wasn't looking after myself. I was getting stuck into work and doing the double shifts and 'ah sure, I'll get a burger and chips'…I always thought I was fit until I actually went on the show. Then I realised, oh God."

Back in the day, David played with the Roscommon minors. Even on his way to his first day of Operation Transformation, people told him he looked okay at the weight he was. He told Ray that he didn't feel okay.

"No, I need something to change."

Changed it did. And David was not alone in his decision to make some changes. His colleagues at Brideswell Garda station, inspired by David, have followed in his footsteps. Sometimes literally, on organised runs.

"We've lost over 400lbs (181kg) on the station and...we're still at it."
