A woman was killed yesterday evening in an axe attack on the campus of the University of Warsaw in the Polish capital.

Local media reported that a 53-year-old woman was attacked by a 22-year-old male law student.

The woman died immediately at the scene.

The University of Warsaw has confirmed that she was a member of staff at the university.

It is understood that she worked at the campus in a security role and was walking across the grounds shortly before 7pm last night when she was attacked by the man, wielding an axe.

The attacker was apprehended shortly after the attack by an officer from Poland's state protection service at the location.

The officer was working as part of a state security detail during a visit by Polish justice minister Adam Bodnar to the university.

A 39-year-old male security guard who tried to stop the attacker was injured at the scene. He remains in hospital and emergency services have confirmed that his condition is stable.

Police have not confirmed a motive behind the attack.

The attacker is in police custody and Warsaw's regional prosecutor's office said it would provide more information about the attack later today.

The University of Warsaw has cancelled lectures for today and has announced a day of mourning.
