The Kremlin has said there is not yet a clear outline of a potential US-Russia deal on Ukraine, but that the political will to move in the direction of an agreement is there.

In a call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that contacts with the US had been positive and useful, but that Moscow would not give a possible timeline for a peace settlement.

"There are no clear outlines of any agreement yet, but there is political will to move towards an agreement.

"And I repeat once again, we highly highly rate the constructive and meaningful contacts that we have had [with the US]."

Ukraine and some of its European allies say Russia is not serious about wanting to end the conflict and have accused it of dragging out the talks with the US.

Russia says the issue is a complex one and that it is therefore not surprising that it will take time to find along-lasting solution.

"Nevertheless, of course we would like to hope for the best, that the work will have positive results. We would not say exactly what the timeframe is here," said Mr Peskov.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian overnight drone attack killed an 85-year-old woman, injured nine people and sparked fires in several buildings in the Russian city of Kursk near the border with Ukraine, regional authorities said.

"Kursk has been subjected to a massive enemy attack overnight," the Kursk region administration said in a post on Telegram messaging app.

A multi-storey apartment building was damaged as a result of the drone attack, with several flats catching fire, acting mayor of Kursk, Sergei Kotlyarov said on Telegram.

Residents have been evacuated to a nearby school, he added.

Drones also hit an ambulance garage, damaging 11 cars, the region's administration said.

The scale of the attack was not immediately clear but Russia's Baza and SHOT Telegram channels, which often publish information from sources in the security services and law enforcement, said that more than 20 blasts shook the city.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports.

Ukraine's air force said in a statement that Russia attacked Ukraine with 52 drones and one missile overnight.

It said 26 of the drones had been shot down, and that a further 19 fell without reaching their targets.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war, which Russia launched with a full-scale invasion on Ukraine more than three years ago.

Ukrainian troops, who staged a cross-border incursion into the Kursk region of which the city of Kursk is the administrative centre, still remain in parts of it, although Russian forces have recaptured much of the lost territory.

The attack follows a Russian missile and bomb attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy over the weekend that killed 35 people and injured at least 119.
