The Vatican has unveiled a new, open-top popemobile, an all-electric Mercedes-Benz that Pope Francis will use when he greets pilgrims in St Peter's Square.

It is the first all-electric, purpose-built popemobile, although Francis has on occasion used electric cars on some of his foreign trips.

The new popemobile has a very similar appearance - but different engine - to the model of Mercedes he has been using in recent months.

The modified version of the Mercedes G-Class mid-size luxury SUV has a heated, elevated seat, and a grab-bar for balance when standing.

Pope Francis has frequently emphasised environmental concerns

As with all previous popemobiles, it is white, the traditional papal colour, and the registration is SCV 1.

"Every detail is perfection," Sten Ola Kallenius, CEO of the Mercedes-Benz Group, told Reuters.

It took "hundreds of hours of craftsmanship... to build a one-of-a-kind popemobile," he said.

The Vatican did not immediately say when the new popemobile would come into service, and declined to provide any information about the vehicle's security features.

Mercedes officials also declined to say how much the vehicle had cost.

Today, Pope Francis was out and about in St Peter's Square in his current popemobile, which looks similar but is not all-electric.

Since becoming pop in March 2013, Francis has largely shunned the use of bulletproof vehicles, preferring to be as close to people as possible.

He has also stressed the importance of environmental issues throughout his papacy.
