Spanish rescue teams in Tenerife have found a body in the area where British teenager Jay Slater went missing nearly a month ago, local police have said.

Police said that evidence strongly suggests that the remains were those of the teenager.

The body is understood to have been found close to Mr Slater's mobile phone's last location, along with his possessions and clothes, the missing persons charity LBT Global said on behalf of his family.

The Guardia Civil police said in a statement that the 19-year-old may have died due to an accidental fall in the mountainous area, which is difficult to access.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine if his death was an accident, it added.

Jay Slater went missing on 17 June.

His phone was last traced to the Masca ravine in a remote national park on the island.

The teenager had called friends and said that his phone battery was low.

Originally from the Lancashire town of Oswaldtwistle, the teenager disappeared following an attempt to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus.

He had attended the NRG music festival with two friends before his disappearance.

The walk from Mr Slater's last-known location to his accommodation would have taken about 11 hours on foot.

The Guardia Civil said today that its officers had maintained a 'continuous and discrete search' in the area

'Continuous and discrete search'

On 30 June, Spanish police announced that they had ended the search that had involved dozens of officers, rescue workers and volunteers using dogs, drones and a helicopter.

However, the Guardia Civil said that its officers had maintained a "continuous and discrete search" in the area.

Jay Slater's mother, Debbie, said on Saturday that the family had arranged for a team of experts with specialist dogs to fly in over the weekend from the Netherlands.

"Jay is just a normal hard-working young lad from Lancashire who is very loved by all who know him," she wrote in a statement, asking people to pray for him and his family.

The family could not be immediately reached for comment.
