A court in the Netherlands has sentenced three men to up to 28 years in prison for the murder of crime journalist Peter R de Vries, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

Mr De Vries was shot in a busy Amsterdam street on 6 July 2021, and died nine days later.

Prosecutors had demanded life sentences for the Dutch man who shot the reporter and for two men from Poland who had been charged with planning the murder and trying to help the shooter escape.

The prominent investigative journalist who had been involved in a court case against one of the country's most wanted drug barons, was shot at least five times as he exited a television studio.

The attack on de Vries, who first won fame for his inside reporting on the 1983 kidnapping of Heineken millionaire Freddy Heineken, sparked wide-spread condemnation and concern for the safety of journalists in Europe.
