Russia has said it had struck the command headquarters of the Ukrainian army's southern grouping, which is based in the port of Odesa where Kyiv reported a missile attack had killed three people.
"The headquarters of the operational command of the Southern grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was struck by operational and tactical aviation, missile forces and artillery," Russia's defence ministry said.
It gave no further details about the attack but said that Russian forces were improving their positions along the entire front line.
Ukrainian prosecutors said residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged in Odesa in an overnight strike while the Southern military command said administrative and residential buildings, medical and educational institutions were hit.
Reuters could not independently confirm the battlefield accounts from either side.
Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian forces in the more than two-year-old war, with many attacks aimed at the city's port facilities.
On Monday, a Russian missile struck an educational institution in the city, killing five people.
Today, local officials said that five people were killed after Russia struck Ukraine's eastern Kharkiv and Donetsk regions.
In the northeastern Kharkiv region bordering Russia, a guided bomb attack killed two people, the region's governor said.
The region -- large parts of which were occupied by Russian forces for months after they invaded in February 2022 -- is under near-constant bombardment from Russian artillery.
"Two guided aerial bombs hit the centre of the town of Zolochiv," around 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the Russian border, Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov said on national television.
"We know of two dead and six injured civilians including an 11-year-old boy," he wrote on Telegram.
A local man aged 67 and a 38-year-old local woman were killed in one car, Mr Synegubov said, posting photographs of black smoke billowing from numerous parked vehicles on fire.
Further east in the Kharkiv region close to the city of Kupiansk, Russian shelling killed a 67-year-old woman in the village of Lelyukivka, Mr Synegubov added.
In the eastern Donetsk region, two people were killed and six injured in the small town of Girnyk, about 15 kilometres from the front line, said Vadym Filashkin, the head of the region's military administration.
"The Russians attacked the town with Uragans this afternoon," Mr Filashkin wrote on Telegram, referring to rocket launchers.
Those killed were a 57-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man, he added.
In its attacks in recent weeks, Moscow has begun using new powerful guided aerial bombs to devastating effect.
Ukraine launches drone attack on Russia
Ukraine launched drones on several Russian regions early today, Russian officials said, with unofficial Russian news outlets reporting a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery after the attack.
Pavel Malkov, governor for the Ryazan region, which shares a border with the Moscow region in its northwestern parts, said that there were no injuries in the drone attacks there.
Russian Telegram channel Baza, which is close to the security services, reported that the attack sparked a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery.
The refinery, owned and run by Rosneft ROSN.MM, refines about 5.8% of Russia's total refined crude. It has been a frequent target for Ukraine's air attacks.
The governors of the Kursk and Voronezh regions in southwest Russia that border Ukraine also reported drone attacks on their territories, saying there was no damage or injuries.
Russia rarely discloses information about the full impact of Ukraine's attacks on its territory and infrastructure.
Kyiv officials say targeting Russia's military, energy and transport infrastructure undermines Moscow's war effort.
Reuters could not independently verify the Russian reports.
