A 38-year-old Co Mayo woman is in a critical condition in an Australian hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound earlier this week.

Police said that she sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen at a house in Millner, a suburb of the northern city of Darwin.

The woman who is originally from the Castlebar area has been named locally as Eileen Gibbons.

Ms Gibbons is the mother of a young child.

Relatives are preparing to travel to Australia to be by her bedside.

It is understood Ms Gibbons emigrated around seven years ago.

She was stabilised by paramedics at the scene following the incident, before being rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital for emergency surgery.

Her condition is described as stable and she is reportedly conscious.

A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a firearm was seized.

Detectives believe that both parties were known to one another.

The shooting happened on Tuesday in the suburb of Millner at around 6.30pm local time (10am Irish time).

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey, of Northern Territory Police, said that "multiple units" were deployed to the scene and the force's Major Crime Squad is investigating the circumstances.

Co Mayo Councillor Martin McLoughlin said everyone in the Castlebar area has been left devastated.

He said: "The community here are shocked to learn of this terrible incident and we want to wish this young mother all the best and hope that she makes a full recovery.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as she remains in a critical condition."

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family.
