The main union representing French air traffic controllers has called for strike action on Friday 15 September, which falls during the Rugby World Cup in France.

In a statement, the SNCTA union said that "as strong inflation continues and is worse than in 2022 ... SNCTA cannot accept that the work of air traffic controllers is devalued year after year".

Following months of talks with the DGAC civil aviation authority, the union said it was calling for a strike on 15 September and invited other unions to join.

Ireland will play their second Rugby World Cup group match the following day when they take on Tonga in Nantes.

Ireland's other games are against Romania in Bordeaux on Saturday 9 September, South Africa on Saturday 23 September and Scotland on Saturday 7 October. Both of those matches are in the Stade de France stadium in Paris.

The tournament runs from Friday 8 September to Saturday 28 October, with the final in the Stade de France.
