Oprah Winfrey hands out supplies after Hawaii wildfires

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey distributed help after a wildfire on Hawaii's Maui island killed at least 55 people.

Ms Winfrey, a resident of Maui, visited the evacuation point at the War Memorial Stadium to find out what supplies were needed.

She told the BBC that it was "a little overwhelming" and that she returned with pillows, nappies and shampoo.

"I came earlier, just to see what people needed and then went shopping because often you make donations of clothes or whatever and it’s not what people need.

"So I actually went to Walmart and Costco and got pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, pillowcases."

The fire, which erupted on Tuesday, has torched 1,000 buildings and left thousands homeless in what was the worst natural disaster in the US state's history.

Thousands of tourists and locals were evacuated from the western side of Maui, which has a year-round population of about 166,000, with some taking shelter on the island or on the neighboring island of Oahu.

Tourists camped out in the Kahului Airport, waiting for flights back home.
