A man accused of killing five neighbours after they asked him to stop firing his rifle in his yard in Texas has been arrested in a neighbouring town after a four-day manhunt, a county sheriff has said.

The suspect was earlier identified as 38-year-old Francisco Oropesa, a Mexican national who immigration officials say had been deported from the United States four times since 2009.

"We now have this man in custody," San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers told reporters.

"He was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry.

"He is behind bars, and he will live out his life behind bars for killing those five," Mr Capers added.

Mr Oropesa had eluded Texas authorities after the shooting last Friday in the small town of Cleveland.

The victims were between the ages of eight and 31.

Mr Oropesa was arrested in the Texas town of Cut and Shoot, about 17km from the Cleveland, San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon told broadcaster NBC.

As authorities deployed hundreds of law enforcement officers to look for Mr Oropesa, they also offered an $80,000 (€72,575) reward for information leading to his capture.

On Sunday, law enforcement officials said the suspect's trail had grown cold as they appealed to the public for tips and offered an $80,000 (€72,575) reward for information leading to his capture.

Mr Capers said he believed the person who tipped off officials would be eligible for the reward.

Officers from the US Marshals Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the US Border Patrol Tactical Unit carried out the arrest about an hour and 15 minutes after receiving the tip, an FBI spokesperson said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott referred to the suspect as having "killed five illegal immigrants," though their immigration status was not immediately clear and Mr Abbott later said at least one victim "may have been in the US legally".

According to police accounts from eyewitnesses, the suspect went inside his house and reloaded his gun, then barged into the neighbour's home and opened fire, killing five of the ten people inside, including an 8-year-old boy.

The victims were all from Honduras and were living at the house, but were not all family members, Mr Capers said.

The sheriff said deputies had been called to Mr Oropesa's house before over complaints about gunfire in his yard.

Mr Capers said police had recovered the weapon used in the shooting and other guns in the suspect's home, and believed he might have been armed with a pistol when he disappeared.

The victims were identified as Sonia Argentina Guzman, aged 25; Diana Velazquez Alvarado, aged 21; Julisa Molina Rivera, aged 31; Jose Jonathan Casarez, aged 18; and eight-year-old Daniel Enrique Laso.
