An Irish man has been shot and killed in New South Wales in Australia.

Police in Oberon, about two hours west of Sydney, were called to a house in Central Tablelands at 8am local time, where they discovered the body of a man with a gunshot wound.

He was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene.

The man has yet to be formally identified, but is believed to have been in his 30s and originally from Sligo.

A 57-year-old man was arrested at the house and taken to Oberon Police Station to assist with inquiries.

The scene has been sealed off and a firearm has been seized for further examination.

Initial inquiries suggest the two men were known to each other.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing assistance, but said it cannot comment on the detail of individual cases.
