US President Joe Biden's wife Jill and daughter have been banned from Russia, along with 23 other Americans, the Russian foreign ministry has said.

"As a reaction to the constantly expanding US sanctions against Russian political and public figures, 25 American citizens are added to a 'stop list,'" the ministry said in a note accompanying the list.

As well as Dr Jill Biden and Ashley Biden, the list featured several US senators, including Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Charles Grassley of Iowa, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

It also included several university professors and researchers and former US government officials.

Russia has already barred entry to Mr Biden, along with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, CIA Chief William Burns, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and others.

They were included on an initial list of 13 individuals banned from Russia in response to sanctions imposed by Washington on Russian officials.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also named.
