US Congressman Joe Kennedy has called on the leaders of the UK's three major political parties to reaffirm their support for the Good Friday Agreement ahead of tomorrow's election.
Congressman Kennedy, who is a grandson of Robert Kennedy, has written to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, and Liberal Democrats leader Jo Swinson urging them to demonstrate continued commitment to an open Irish border and the continued implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
The letter is co-signed by his fellow Democratic Congressmen Richard Neal and Brendan Boyle.
"Regardless of the electoral outcome on 12 December and the eventual framework, if any, of the UK's departure from the European Union, it is essential that the hard-won peace of the Good Friday Agreement be preserved and not undermined by any Brexit calculations," the letter states.
The bill urges the UK and the EU to ensure that Brexit does not threaten peace on the island of Ireland and strongly opposes the reintroduction of a hard border.
It also insists that any trade agreements between the US and the UK are contingent on meeting the Good Friday Agreement's obligations.
