There are unconfirmed reports that the baby son of Shamima Begum, a teenager who fled the UK to join Islamic State in Syria, has died.

Ms Begum, 19, gave birth to the boy in a refugee camp in the middle of February, having already lost two children.

Her family's lawyer Tasnime Akunjee said today they had received "strong but as yet unconfirmed reports" the young baby had died, adding: "He was a British citizen."

A spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces had earlier said the baby was still alive, but the group later told the BBC that the boy had died.

Ms Begum was 15 when she and two other schoolgirls went to join the terror group in February 2015.

She resurfaced heavily-pregnant a refugee camp in northern Syria last month and spoke of her desire to return to the UK, as the self-styled caliphate collapsed.

British Home Secretary Sajid Javid revoked Ms Begum's British citizenship last month.
