The family of a Galway man missing in Malaysia say they remain hopeful he will be found safe and well.

Stephen Warde - from Kinvara - was last in contact with his family on New Year's Day. Since then there have been no sightings of the 31-year-old.

Mr Warde, who runs an online business, had been travelling and working in the area since mid November.

His family say it would be totally out of character for him to vanish without trace.

A number of his siblings have travelled to Kuala Lumpur in recent weeks to support his mother, Mary, who has been in Malaysia since mid January.

She says she intends to stay in the country until her son is located.

There has been an outpouring of support from Galway locals, who have raised thousands to support the Warde family.

They will gather for a special mass in Kinvara this evening, where prayers will be offered for the safe return of their neighbour.

Mr Warde's sister Aoife said the family were heartened by the offers of assistance from the local community and she paid tribute to Irish people in Malaysia, who have been helping in the search effort.

Despite an extensive trawl of hotels and hospitals, there has been no sign of her brother.

Ms Warde said that a private investigator had been hired to follow up any leads.

She has called on the Department of Foreign Affairs to liaise with the Malaysian police to ensure that they remain focused on the investigation.

A GofundMe webpage has generated over €16,000 in donations to assist in the search operation.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Joe Burke said the community wanted to do whatever it could to help the Warde family.

He paid tribute to the hundreds of people who have given their time and financial assistance, saying it was a mark of the area to come together in support of their neighbours.
