A 24-year-old man has been arrested in South Africa for the murder of Irishman John Curran, local police have confirmed.

Mr Curran died from stab wounds in Cape Town on 7 November. His body was found at his apartment in the South African city.

The man will appear in court on Monday, where he will face a charge of murder.

South African Police Service earlier circulated CCTV images of a suspect and issued an appeal to trace his whereabouts.

"Detectives followed up on leads and a suspect was circulated. The 24-year-old man was arrested in Voortrekker Road last night and he is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates' Court on Monday, 26 November 2018 where he is facing a charge of murder," a spokesperson for the police service said.

The provincial commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, commended the investigators for their "dedication to bring the perpetrators to justice."

Mr Curran, a well-known Irish teacher, had been working in South Africa as a Director of Education at Mellon Educate.

He had just completed his two-year contract with them and was due to return to Ireland.

He was the principal of the Good Shepherd National School in Dublin's Churchtown for 14 years up until 2005.

A memorial service was held yesterday in Dublin for the popular charity worker.
