South African police have released CCTV images relating to the investigation into the murder of Irish charity worker John Curran.

The popular Irish teacher was found dead at his apartment in Cape Town last week.

The police service released CCTV images of a man inside a lift, in the hope that anyone with information will be able to assist with the investigation.

Captain FC Van Wyck of the South African Police Service said that they are looking to speak with the man pictured.

"He can possibly help in the investigation into the murder," Capt Van Wyck told RTÉ News.

A statement from the police department appealed to the public in South Africa to identify the person, and asked for "information that will lead to his arrest".

The initial investigation into the discovery of the body indicated that Mr Curran had suffered fatal stab wounds.

Mr Curran had been working in South Africa as a Director of Education at Mellon Educate and had recently retired from that position.

He had just completed his two-year contract with them and was due to return to Ireland shortly.

He was the principal of the Good Shepherd National School in Dublin's Churchtown for 14 years up until 2005.
