Police in Germany say a hostage situation in Cologne is under control.

A man believed to be armed had taken a woman hostage in a pharmacy inside the city's central railway station.

German media reported that several shots appeared to have been fired at the station, which is next to the city's cathedral.

Police said the suspect is "under control" and the woman sustained light injuries.

Police commandos were deployed and the busy railway station was closed off to all passengers and trains.

Germany is on high alert for militant attacks, almost two years after a Tunisian Islamist rammed a hijacked truck into a Christmas market in central Berlin, killing 11 people as well as the driver.
