Canadian police have identified the man who shot dead a ten-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman in Toronto.

Faisal Hussain, 29, a Toronto resident, was found dead after the attack following an exchange of gunfire with police.

Police said a further 13 people were wounded in the attack.

The gunman, armed with a handgun, opened fire on a street lined with restaurants and family-friendly attractions in the city's Greektown neighbourhood.

His family wrote in a statement that he had suffered from severe mental illness.

"We are utterly devastated by the incomprehensible news that our son was responsible for the senseless violence and loss of life," his family said in a statement.

They added that he suffered from severe mental illness as well as from "psychosis and depression his entire life".

"While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end," they said.

Canadian police are still trying to establish a motive for the shooting spree.

"We do not know why this happened," Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told reporters.

He added that he would not speculate about the gunman's motive saying: "It's way too early to rule out anything."
