92-year-old Malaysian veteran ex-leader Mahathir Mohamad has said he expects to be sworn in as prime minister later today after a surprise election win.

"We expect today for me to be sworn in as prime minister," he told a press conference in the capital Kuala Lumpur, addressing concerns over a delay by saying that some "confusion" over the process had now been cleared up.

Mr Mahathir stormed to an unexpected victory at the head of an alliance packed with parties that opposed him during his two decades in power, toppling the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

The former strongman came out of retirement to take on his former protege, scandal-hit prime minister Najib Razak.

Mr Mahathir said his coalition will have the support of 135 members of Malaysia's 222-seat parliament,

The BN has ruled since Malaysia's independence from Britain, nearly 60 years ago.

Mr Mahathir said that his government would likely reverse some policies implemented by the long-ruling BN coalition, including a highly unpopular goods and services tax.

He also said Malaysia may renegotiate some deals with China.

Malaysia is one of the largest beneficiaries of Chinese investment commitments in Asia, securing $34.2 billion in infrastructure projects, which have prompted critics to accuse Mr Najib of "selling" Malaysia to the Asian powerhouse.
