Steve Bannon has stepped down as executive chairman of right-wing news organisation Breitbart News.

It comes after the former White House chief strategist was quoted in a book criticising US President Donald Trump.

Mr Bannon has been abandoned by financial patrons, condemned by former political allies and ridiculed by Mr Trump over his comments.

He later backed away from the derogatory comments ascribed to him about President Trump's son in "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by journalist Michael Wolff.

He was quoted as saying a June 2016 meeting with a group of Russians attended by Donald Trump Jr and his father’s top campaign officials was treasonous and unpatriotic.

The president responded by saying Mr Bannon had lost his mind and the White House suggested Breitbart News part ways with Mr Bannon as its executive chairman.

Bannon, who left the White House in August, said in a statement released on Sunday that his comments were directed at Paul Manafort, Mr Trump's former campaign manager, and not aimed at the president's son.

In a statement tonight, he said: "I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world-class news platform."

"Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he has helped us to accomplish," said Breitbart Chief Executive Larry Solov.
