The Russian foreign minister has once again called for the United States and North Korea to start negotiations, the RIA news agency reported.
Sergei Lavrov was cited as saying that Russia was ready to facilitate such negotiations.
Russia has long called for both sides to hold talks aimed at de-escalating tensions around North Korea's nuclear and missile programme.
North Korea's foreign ministry said yesterday that the latest UN sanctions against North Korea were an act of war and tantamount to a complete economic blockade against it.
On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously backed a US drafted resolution imposing new sanctions including measures which will severely reduce the country's oil and petrol imports.
China has also called on all countries to make a constructive effort to ease tensions.
Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the resolution appropriately strengthened sanctions but was not designed to affect ordinary people, normal economic exchanges and cooperation, or humanitarian aid.
Ms Hua noted it also called for the use of peaceful means to resolve the issue and that all sides should take steps to reduce tension
Meanwhile, Mr Lavrov also said that the timing of the next meeting between Russian president Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump has not yet been discussed.
