US President Donald Trump has said Puerto Rico's massive debt will have to be wiped out.
He made the comment while on a trip to the island to observe hurricane recovery efforts.
In an interview with Fox News, he said: "They owe a lot of money to your friends on Wall Street and we're going to have to wipe that out.
"You're going to say goodbye to that, I don't know if it's Goldman Sachs but whoever it is you can wave goodbye to that."
Earlier this year Puerto Rico filed for bankruptcy - the biggest in US municipal history.
The island is struggling to regain economic stability in the face of a $72bn debt load and near-insolvent public health and pension systems.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria has more than doubled to 34, according to a spokesman for Governor Ricardo Rosello.
